Black-winged Stilt




Black-winged Stilt is a large (35 to 39 cm) black and white wader with long orange-red legs and a straight black bill. It has black on the back of the neck, a white collar and a red iris.

The bird gives a repeated high-pitched barking call. Black-winged Stilt is locally called Gaz Paon or Tinghur. The bird is normally found in small groups. It prefers freshwater and saltwater marshes, mudflats and the shallow edges of lakes and rivers. The bird mainly feeds on aquatic insects, but will also takes molluscs and crustaceans.

It breeds in small colonies between April and August. It is a resident species found throughout India, upto 1500 m in Himalayas.
