Black Plum is a large evergreen tree with pale brown bark found in Indian subcontinent. The stem has variable, lanceolate, elliptic-oblong, and acute leaves. Flowers, white and fragrant, are arranged mostly in threes in trichotomous panicles. Petals are thin and membranous. Fruit is ellipsoid of oblong, crowned with the truncate calyx-limb, black with pink juicy pulp.
Black Plum consists of malic acid, oxalic acid, gallic acid, and tannins. The fruits are useful in preparing an ingredient, which is used against asthma. The juice of ripe fruit is used for preparing sauces as well as beverages. Unripe fruit is used in vinegar. It also shows anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic and antipyretic properties. Jamun grows naturally under mother trees from the fallen seeds.
Jambu, Rajajambu, Mahajambu, Badijamun, and Phadena are the popular Indian names.
