Black Nightshade, an herbaceous or suffrutescent wild plant, grows throughout India in dry parts, up to an elevation of 2,100 m. The leaves (narrowed at both ends) are ovate, and sinuate-toothed or lobed. The flowers are white and drooping umbel-like with three to eight flowered clusters. The berries are red, yellow or black and round. The seeds are discoid, smooth, yellow and minutely pitted.
Black Nightshade is used in the treatment of cirrhosis of the liver. The plant shows emollient, diuretic, antiseptic and laxative properties.
It is also known as Kakamachi and Kakahva.
