Black Buck Antelope, one of the fastest animals on earth, is the common name for an antelope found in India. It has ringed horns. Black Buck Antelope is also known as Kala Hiran. These antelopes are seen in
Punjab,
Rajasthan,
Haryana,
Gujarat, and Central India.
The horns of the antelope have a moderate spiral twist of three to four turns. The adult male weighs 32 to 43 kg, and stands about 80 cm at the shoulder. The upper parts of the body are black and the under-parts white. Light-brown females are usually hornless. Males are dark brown in colour. The animals eat grass, pods, fruits, and flowers. Velavadar Black Buck Sanctuary and Bandhavgarh National Park are the two famous homes of the Indian Black Buck.
Black Buck Antelope is considered the vehicle of Chandrama (moon). Its skin is used in worshipping. The horns and the skin are regarded as holy objects in Hinduism.
