Bipin Chandra Pal




Bipin Chandra Pal, a patriotic leader, was born on November 7, 1858 at Sylhet in Bangladesh. Ram Chandra Pal, who served as an assistant to the subordinated judge of Dacca, was his father. Pal joined Brahma Samaj at an early age, and he strongly opposed caste restrictions.

Pal started his political career by joining Indian National Congress in 1886. Later, he formed the New Party in association with Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Lala Lajpat Rai. He supported female education, and played a major role to put an end to child marriage. Pal did not support 37370Mahatma Gandhi?s appeal to the nation for non-cooperation, boycott of legislatures and foreign cloth.

A prolific writer, Pal has to his credit some outstanding essays in Bengali. He wrote for various journals, and also edited a number of magazines and newspapers such as The Tribune and New India. His enlightening speeches earned him the title of ?Arch seditionist?. One of his remarkable contributions is the founding of the newspaper named Bande Mataram in 1906.

Pal retired from active politics, and during his last days, he turned to the study of Vedanta. He passed away in 1932.
