Bhathru Dwithiya

Bhathru Dwithiya (Yama Dwithiya) is celebrated on the last day of the diwali festival. Bhathru Dwithiya is dedicated to the caring spirit of sisters.

On this day, brothers visit their sisters’ house and have food there in the traditional way of celebration. The sisters apply a tilak of vermilion, saffron and rice on their brothers' forehead as a mark of love. This custom is called Bhagini Hastha Bhojanam. The custom is followed in remembrance of the legendary visit of Lord Krishna and Yama to their sisters’ place and having food there. Yama and his record keeper Chithraguptha are worshiped on this day.
