Bhai Vir Singh

Father of modern punjabi poetry



A gifted Punjabi writer, Bhai Vir Singh (1872-1957) is considered as the father of modern Punjabi poetry. He was a versatile scholar, eqally at home with Sikhism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam. He has penned a substantial number of prose, novels, poems, and plays. Guru Nanak Chamatkar, Kalgi Dhar Chamatkar, Rana Surat Singh, Mera Sajan Jeo, Lehran De Har, Matak Holare, and Bijlian are among his renowned works. Bhai Vir Singh is also credited with the founding of Khalsa Tract Society and Khalsa Samachar, a weekly paper.
