Begusarai, located near the northern bank of the Ganges, is the administrative headquarters of Begusarai District, in Bihar. It is a prominent industrial center and agricultural market of the district. Begusarai is 106 km east of Patna.
Begusarai derives its name after serai (a Persian word for 'travelers' lodge') that once existed in the town center. It is probably the only major industrial town in the state. Begusarai is home to a fertilizer factory, thermal power station and petrochemical factories and is a major earner in terms of revenue for the state.
Patna Airport is the nearest airport. Begusarai Railway Station is an important railhead in central Bihar. National Highway 31 passes through Begusarai.
