Barking Deer
Also known as Kakad
The Barking Deer (Muntiacus muntjak) lives in thickly wooded hills and moist mixed deciduous forest. It is also known as Kakad. The deer has a height of up to 50-75 cm. It weighs approximately 22-23 kg. The antlers are small with a short brow line and an unbranched beam. The upper canines are used for self-defense. Antlers are usually single spiked. The Kakad likes loneliness, and are rarely seen in numbers exceeding two. The Muntjak eats grass, leaves, and wild fruits. The animal can be seen in Kamla Nehru Zoo, Sakkarbaug Zoo, Mysore Zoo, Nandankanan Biological Park, and Mahendra Chaudhury Zoo.
