B Ekbal is a noted health activist, neurosurgeon, author, and the first physician to become the vice-chancellor of the premier institution of higher learning in
Kerala, the
Kerala University. Ekbal was born on September 9th, 1947 at
Changanacherry. After schooling and Pre-University course, he did his Pre-Professional course in the year 1964-'65. He took MBBS degree and completed his MS in General Surgery in 1980. He also did his M Ch in Neurosurgery from
Medical College,
Thiruvananthapuram.
Associated with many progressive social movements and activities in Kerala, Dr.Ekbal writes on health matters in both Malayalam and English journals. He is an active member of the Kerala Shastra Sahitya Parishad and was the President of the organization from 1983 to 1985. He is also associated with national and international organizations like 'International People's Health Council (Nicaragua)','Consumers International (Malaysia)', and Health Action International (Netherlands).
