Arthur Seat

Tourist spot with a beautiful view of Konkan

Arthur Seat is a well-known location in Mahabaleshwar. Located 12 km from Mahabaleshwar, at a height of 1348 m, this place is named after an Englishman Arthur Mallet, who is said to have lost his wife and infant daughter in the river Savitri. This point provides an enchanting view of the deep, barren valley of the Savitri in the Konkan Valley on the left side and the dense forests of Brahmaranya of the Deccan on the right. This is the only place that shows the geographical distinction between the Konkan and the Deccan territories of Mahabaleshwar. The densely forested Jaoli valley is also seen from here. On the right lower side 60 m below is the Window Point, which is very dangerous and risky to approach.

The precipice known as Arthur Seat collapsed in November 1973, but the adjoining rear portion which offers almost the same view also has the same name. En route to Arthur Seat, there is a little stream called Tiger Spring, which tigers and panthers are said to frequent.

Marjorie, Elphinston and Savitri Points and Castle Rock are beautiful picnic spots on the way to Arthur Seat.
