Amla Navami is celebrated during the bright fortnight of the Hindu month of Kartik (October-November). On this day, water containing the paste of Amla fruit is poured on the idol of
Lord Vishnu. Food, to be offered to the deity, is cooked under an Amla tree. This ritual is performed by women observing ‘karika vrata’, a ritualistic fast.
This festival symbolizes protection of nature and compassion towards fellow beings. The Amla fruit is a major ingredient in many Ayurvedic medicines due to its medicinal properties. It is also the divine fruit of Lord Vishnu according to Vishnu Purana.
