Ambrette seeds are used in perfumes and medicine. It grows wild in the Deccan regions and in the hilly regions of
Karnataka. It is also found at the foothills of the
Himalayas.
The plant is an erect, annual or biennial, hirsute herb. The flowers, usually solitary and axillary, are bright yellow in appearance. Musk seed oil or ambrette seed oil is obtained on steam distillation of crushed seeds of Ambrette Plant.
Ambrette is a stimulant, antiseptic, cooling, tonic, carminative and aphrodisiac. Latakasturi, Gandapura, Kasturilatika, Kasturidana and Muskadana are its popular names.
