Botanical name of Alfalfa is Medicago Satina. Growing to a height of 50 cm, Alfalfa is one of the most versatile herbs that are found in India. Alfalfa was discovered by the Arabs and they called it the ‘King of Kings’ among plants and the father of all foods. It can grow even in varying conditions of soil and climate. The plant is rich in vitamins such as A, B, D, E and G as well as calcium, magnesium and phosphorous, chlorine, sodium, potassium and silicon.
Dried leaves of alfalfa and its heat-treated seeds are used in herbal supplements. Its use is recommended in treating high cholesterol levels and is helpful to lessen problems related to menopause in women. Alfalfa is also considered therapeutic for water retention and arthritis. It is an ideal tonic for indigestion, dyspepsia, anemia, loss of appetite, and poor assimilation of nutrients. The seeds are used in the treatment of boils and insect bites.
Alfalfa is now widely cultivated in the temperate regions and subtropics.
