Alap

Alap is a slow rhythmic style of music with a free elaboration of Raga. Performed as the introductory section, the length of the music varies from few seconds to an hour. Here Raga is explored as a whole.

Alaps are classified into two, based on the usage of words. If words or bols are not used, then the form is known as Anakshar Alap. Otherwise it is Sakshar Alap. General purpose words such as Anantha, Hari, Om, Narayan or words of the corresponding song are commonly used.

This style is not that much popular, but it requires proper training and deep knowledge. Strict rules should be followed. Vocal Alap is performed with the accompaniment of Tambura and Sitar.
