Abhang

Abhang is a devotional song composed by any one of the reputed saints belonging to the medieval period. The word ‘abhang’ literally means ‘one which cannot be destroyed,’ referring to the popularity and immortal nature of the songs. This kind of song is more of a religious discourse. The hymns contain the words of wisdom from the saints.

Abhangs were originally composed in the Sanskrit language, which was the language used by the elite religious class. Later on, these songs were composed in the Prakrit languages, which were the languages used by the common people, to make them more popular.

Pakhwaj, tabla and tanpura are the commonly used instruments during an Abhang recital.
