Purushottam Das Tandon



Purushottam Das Tandon was one of the famous personalities of the Indian National Congress. He was a strong supporter of Hindi as a national language. He was deeply religious and followed the Hindu Ideals. He emphasized the similarities between the Hindu and Muslim cultures.

Tandon was born on August 1, 1882. He had his education at Lahore. He joined the Congress in 1899, when he was a student. He entered the legal profession in 1906. His active participation in various movements related to the freedom struggle of India, led to his arrest several times. He presided over the Uttar Pradesh Legislature as a Speaker, in 1937 and in 1945. He presided over the Congress session in Nasik, Maharashtra in 1950. He was elected to the Lok Sabha (House of People) in 1952 and the Rajya Sabha (Council of States) in 1956. He retired from politics in 1956. He received the 'Bharat Ratna’, the highest civilian award given by the Indian Government in 1961. He died on July 1, 1961.
