Balurghat

Balurghat, the district headquarters of South Dinajpur District, lies on the shores of Kulik River in West Bengal. Surrounded by green trees, this small municipal town had an important role in the August Movement in the year 1942 against the British.

There are two small forests in the vicinity namely the Raghunathpur (1 km) and the Dogachhi (6 km west), which enhance picnickers and tourists. Atryee (Atrai) River flows through the western parts of the town.

A zigzag canal with boating facility, by the side of the Dogachhi forest, is a prime attraction for the people visiting this place. Other places of tourist interest are Balurghat College Museum, Khanpur, Patiram Thakur Estate and Bolla Kali Temple.

By road, Balurghat is linked with Gangarampur, Malda, Raiganj, Bindola and Badalpur.
