Belur Mutt, founded by Swami Vivekananda in 1897, is 10 km from
Kolkata on the banks of the Hooghly River. The headquarters of Ramakrishna Mutt and Ramakrishna Mission is also situated here.
Vivekananda carried on his shoulders, the ashes of Ramakrishna Paramhansa in a copper casket and deposited it at Belur. The Ramakrishna Temple here is an international pilgrim center. The other places of attractions are Sri Ramakrishna Museum, Vivekananda’s residence, and Matri Mandir. The birth anniversaries of Ramakrishna, Vivekananda and holy mother Sarada Devi are celebrated here. Belur is well-connected by trains and buses.
