Almora District




Almora District is a picturesque region in Kumaon, situated east of Uttaranchal. Almora has a breathtaking panoramic view of the Himalayas. The total area is 3,090 sq km. The major languages are Hindi, English and Kumaoni. The important fairs and festivals are the Uttaraini Fair, Nanda Devi Fair, Shravan Mela - Jageshwar, and Dussehra. The major places of worship are the Doonagiri Temple, Jhula Devi Temple, Jageshwar Temple, Hanuman Temple, Ulkadevi Temple, Jama Masjid, Ratneshwar Temple, Bhairav Temple, and Nanda Devi Temple. The tourist destinations are Kausani, Ranikhet, Deolidanda, Chaubattia and Doonagiri. The region is immensely rich with around 4000 species of plants. Almora is known for its rich cultural heritage, unique handicrafts, cuisine and wildlife. The nearest airport is Pant Nagar Airport, 127 km away. The nearest railway station is situated at Kathgodam, about 90 km away from the district headquarters, Almora.
