Kumaon




Situated in the state of Uttaranchal and close to the Garhwal region, Kumaon, the hilly area covers 21,035 Sq km. It got its name from 'Kurmanchal' which means the land of Kurma Avatar, an avatar of Lord Vishnu. This land of never-ending excitement borders with Kausani and Ranikhet, small towns renowned for mountain views and hill walks. It encompasses districts such as Nainital, Almora and Pithoragarh.

Kumaon is considered one among the five geographical zones of the Himalaya-Nepal, Kurmanchal, Kedarkhand, Jalandharkhand, and Kashmir. Rock paintings dating back to very early period are found at Lakhu Udyan in the Binsar Gad Valley. It is rich in cultural heritage and festivals. The majestic Kumaon Hills serve as a unique spot for tourists, trekkers, and pilgrims.
