Udaipur



Udaipur City is the capital of Udaipur District, Rajasthan. Udaipur was founded by Maharana Udai Singh in 1559 following the advice of a hermit. The city had eleven gates of which only five are remaining. The main entrance to the city is the Suraj Pol or Sun Gate. The place is fascinating with its buildings and culture. Situated near Lake Pichhola, this city preserves its past glory through fairy-tale palaces, lakes, temples, gardens and narrow lanes strewn with stalls. Udaipur city is well connected other parts of the State and the country. Major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Jodhpur, and Jaipur have direct airlinks here. It is also accessible by road and rail. There are daily trains from Delhi and Jaipur. Udaipur city provides good shopping opportunities for local craft works, paintings, and textiles. Major attractions of the city include palaces, Saheliyon-ki-bari, Suraj Gokhada, Pratap Memorial, Gulab Bagh, Lake Pichhola, Jag Mandir, Jagdeesh temple, museums, galleries, and Shilp gram.
