Administrative headquarters of Jalaun District, Orai is located midway between Kanpur and Jhansi, on National Highway 25. It is 105 km southwest of Kanpur and is 35 km from Kalpi.

Orai is a trade centre for agricultural produce. Indira Gandhi Stadium, famous for cricket, is situated here.

Orai Railway Station connects Kanpur and Lucknow. The nearest airport is at Lucknow.
