Tanakpur is a little known town located on the banks of Sarada River, in the Kumaon Himalayas of
Uttaranchal. It was established around 1880 by the British on the site of the earlier town of Brahmadeo. Except for the river, the town holds no particular tourist interest; the place is better known as the railhead to
Pithoragarh.
From the town, excursions to Shukhidhung, Purnagiri, Shyamlatal, Champawat and Pithoragarh will be an enchanting experience.
Tanakpur Railway Station is a terminus of the line coming from Pilibhit. Buses are less frequent in this route; hence hiring a private vehicle would be a better bet.
