Ashoka Pillar

Ashoka Pillar at Sarnath (also called the Saranath Pillar) is situated 10 km from Varanasi in Varanasi District of Uttar Pradesh. The pillar marks Emperor Ashoka’s visit to Sarnath. The pillar, carved out of stone, rises to a height of 50 m. Ashoka Pillar has the figures of four lions standing on the top and a chakra (wheel), called Ashoka chakra, at its base. The significance of the figures of the lion lies in its selection as the official emblem of India and the inclusion of Ashoka chakra in the national flag.

Though the Ashoka pillar has collapsed and is mutilated, its ruins still give a feel of its past grandeur. Dhamekh Stupa, Dharmarajika Stupa, Mulgandhakuti Vihara, Sarnath Museum and Chaukhandi are some of the attractions in the vicinity. Babatpur Airport in Varanasi and Varanasi Junction Railway Station are the closest travel access from afar.
