National Highway 44 links the capital city of
Meghalaya,
Shillong with the border village of
Sabroom in
Tripura. This 630 km stretch spans across the states of Meghalaya,
Assam and Tripura and touches some major district headquarters towns and cities on its way. Starting at Shillong, the highway passes south-east past Jowai and Sutnga to enter Assam. It travels a distance of 184 km in Meghalaya.
National Highway 44 then travels southwards through Karimganj and Baraigram before entering Tripura near Dharmanagar, the total distance traversed in the state being 111 km.
Moving again south and past Ambassa, Agartala and Udaipur, the highway finally terminates at Sabroom, near the Indo-Bangla international border.
Jambai,
Barjala and Dumbar are few tourist locations lying near National Highway 44 at various points on the way.
