Toda tribe of
Tamil Nadu is known for its unique embroidery style. The Toda embroidery garments are in great demand with visitors from other parts of India and abroad.
This art-work, practiced exclusively by the women, is so fine that it is often mistaken as a weave at the first glance. Girls learn this art from their mothers at a very young age.
The embroidery is done using red and black threads on a white background, producing a rich effect. The motifs show a little bit of Macedonian influence. The traditional clothes worn by the Toda people exhibit this work.
Apart from clothes, Toda embroidery is used for adorning a range of products like pouches, spectacle cases, luncheon sets, table cloths and other similar accessories.
