Karaikudi




The biggest city in Sivagangai District, Karaikudi is a place with immense religious importance and a rich cultural heritage. It got its name form the plant Karai which was found here in abundance. The city forms part of the region called Chettinad, the land of the Nattu Kottai Chettiars, a prosperous banking community.

Karaikudi was well on the path to development in as early as 1930. Even then it was well-connected by road and rail. The people of Karaikudi have played a prominent role in India's struggle for independence.

The Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here attracts pilgrims from all over the State. Two famous Institutions have been established here - the Alagappa University and CECRI, a leading research and development institution of electro-chemical science and technology. Sekkalai, Muthumariamman Temple, Koppudaiaamman Temple and Tamil Thai Koil are other local attractions.

Karaikudi is has good railways and roadways connecting to all important towns. Madurai airport is 90 km away.
