Brahmi Script

Brahmi Script is India’s oldest script. Several Indian, South Asian and East Asian languages derive their scripts from Brahmi Script. The origin of the script is debatable. However, it is believed to have Semitic origin. Brahmi has 'syllabic alphabets'; which means that each sign can either be a simple consonant or a consonant with inherent vowel. The rock edicts of Emperor Ashoka are in Brahmi script. Bengali, Assamese and Oriya are some of the modern Indian languages whose scripts have originated from Brahmi Script.
