Shikhara

Gopuram

Shikhara is a pyramid-shaped royal tower situated at the entrance of temples. In the north, the Shikhara normally has a large round cushion-like part called an amalaka. But the South Indian shikharas have smaller stories of small pavilions, a narrow neck, and a dome on the top. Though most of the temples have four entrances with towers, there will be only one Rajagopuram, which is the biggest. Lingaraja Temple in Bhuvaneswar, Kandarya Mahadev temples at Khajuraho and Madhya Pradesh are excellent examples of Shikhara styles.
