Guru Hargobind

Guru Hargobind was the only son of guru arjan. Born in 1595, Guru became the sixth Sikh Guru in 1606, only a few days before his father’s martyrdom. He used to carry two swords which represented secular power and spiritual authority. The famous Akal Takht in Amritsar was constructed by him. Guru Hargobind is also known as Sacha Padshah, the true king, after he donned the royal garment of a king. In order to resist the threat from the Mughals, Guru Hargobind raised an army of one thousand horses and encouraged the Sikhs in weapons training.

It is believed that Guru impressed the Emperor Jahangir with his religious discourse. He also founded the town Kiratpur in 1626. Guru defeated the Mughal army in a historical war that took place in 1634. Guru Hargobind spent his entire life transforming the Sikhs into soldier-saints. He passed away in 1644. Large numbers of Gurdwaras are constructed all over India in honor of Guru Hargobind.
