Spotted Mouse Deer

Indian Chevrotain

Spotted Mouse Deer (Tragulus meminna) is a small animal with slender limbs and high hindquarters and is seen in grass-covered rocky hillsides or tropical rain forest.

The coat is olive-brown minutely speckled with yellow. The flanks are marked with rows of buffs or white spots, which elongate and pass into longitudinal bands. The inferior parts are pallid.

Small size, shy habits, and very protective coloring allow them to get away easily from predators. It shows an amazing ability in climbing a hollow standing tree. Mouse Deer eats grass and other vegetable matter.

The animals is found in almost all the important sanctuaries in South India.
