Headquartered at Maligaon in
Guwahati, North East Frontier Railways was established on January 15, 1958. Early railway agencies Assam Bengal Railways and North Eastern Railways have been combined to form the present day North East Frontier Railways. With divisional headquarters at Alipurduar,
Katihar, Lumding and
Tinsukia, the organization serves the states of
Arunachal Pradesh,
Assam,
Manipur,
Mizoram,
Nagaland,
Tripura,
Meghalaya,
Bihar and
West Bengal. Also, it also serves the Himalayan kingdoms of Nepal and Bhutan and exchanges services with Bangladesh Railways.
It is the smallest of the railway zones in India. A total of 516 railway stations fall under the administrative control of the North East Frontier Railways. Darjeeling Railway Station, Alipurduar Junction Railway Station, Guwahati Junction Railway Station and Tinsukia Junction Railway Station are the main stations served by the railways.
Computerized reservation facilities, retiring rooms, waiting rooms and refreshment rooms are provided at the main stations. Major tourist spots served by the railways are Darjeeling, Coochbehar, Kalimpong, Malinithan and Silchar.
