Tangkhul Tribe




Tangkhul Tribe inhabits the Ukhrul District of east Manipur. Different legends depict the birth of this tribe in different ways. The Tangkhul tribe members speak Meiteilon and write in Roman script. Their sub tribes and nationalities have distinct languages and dialects. The important source of economy is agriculture. They cultivate rice, cotton, millet, maize, arum, chilli, sesame, ginger, tomato, pumpkin, cucumber and beans. Tangkhul tribe is the most educated tribe in the state.

Tangkhul has had many representatives in the Legislative Assembly as ministers and chief ministers. Also, Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers, doctors, engineers and professors dominate the tribe. Tangkhul has the highest number of professionals in Manipur, after the Meiteis.
