Thane District is located in the north-western part of
Maharashtra. It is bordered by
Nasik District and
Ahmednagar District in the east,
Raigad District in the south and
Pune District in the south-east. Thane District has an area of 9,558 sq km. It receives rainfall from south-west monsoon (June to September). Thane District has a population of over 5.2 million. The chief crops are rice, ragi and pulses. Tribal, koli, tarpa and drum dances are the flok-arts.
Thane is an industrially advanced district of the State of Maharashtra. Paper mill at Thane; paint and chemical factories at Thane and
Bhaindar; matchbox factories at Ambernath and Thane; and pharmaceutical and chemical factories at Ambernath, Bhaindar and Thane are some of the major industries. The first nuclear power plant of India is located in Thane. Jawahar and Suryamal are the hill-stations in Thane District.
Tansa wildlife sanctuary, Kashi Mira, Jawhar Palace, Essel World,
Arnala fort, Yeoor Hills and Tikujiniwadi are some of the tourist attractions.
