Nasik District is bordered by
Dhule District in the north,
Jalgaon District in the east, Aurangabad District in the south-east,
Ahmednagar District in the south,
Thane District in the south-west and the state of
Gujarat in the north-west. The total land area covering the district comes around 15,540 sq km.
Marathi,
Konkani and Adivasi are the languages spoken. The temperature varies from 18
o C to 38
o C.
Located on a tableland from 1,300 to 2,000 ft above the sea level, Nasik District has a population of about 5 million. Temples and ghats on the banks of
Godavari have made Nasik one of the holiest places for Hindus. The major rivers are Godavari and Girna. The chief crops are millet, wheat, oilseeds, cotton and sugarcane.
Old hill forts are the major tourist attractions. Other places of interest are Trimbkeshwar Jyotirling, Vani, Saptshirang fort, Gangapur Dam, MiG Aircraft factory (Ozhar) and Rangmahal of
Ahilyabai Holkar at Chandwad.
