Ahmednagar City is situated on the Sina River, east of
Mumbai,
Maharashtra. This is the capital of
Ahmednagar district. The city was established in the 15th century on the edge of the
Deccan Plateau, on the eastern side of the
Western Ghats, by Ahmed Nizamshah. In 1797, this historic city was captured by Hindu Marathas, and in 1803 by the British. Jawaharlal Nehru was imprisoned here from 1942 to 1945. Chhatrapati Shivaji, leader of the Marathas, was born in Ahmednagar.
Situated near the ancient city of Bhingar, Ahmednagar comprises many sites, worthy of visit. Several
Mughal buildings, Ahmednagar Fort and the second-largest display of military tanks in the world add to the attraction. There are a number of Ganesh shrines and the site of Meher Baba's samadhi. The iron bridge on the Sina river near the railway station is more than 100 years old. Shirdi, Newasa, Shanishingnapur, Devgad, Mohatadevi, Sidhhatek, Rameshwar and Kolgaon are nearby. Pune (120 km) is the closest airport.
