Shivpuri District




Shivpuri is situated in the northern part of Madhya Pradesh. Spread over an area of 10,278 sq km, it is marked by small hilltops and forests. Shivpuri was once the summer capital of the Scindia clan of Gwalior, and earlier its dense forests had provided ample hunting grounds for the Mughal emperors. It is famed for its beauty and cultural heritage. There are numerous palaces and lakes. The climate is cool and dry with an average rainfall of 875 mm.

Shivpuri is mainly an agricultural district. Rice, jowar, bajra, maize, wheat and barley are the main cereal crops. Sugarcane, condiments and spices, and linseed are the other crops.

Shivpuri District is enriched with various tourist attractions. The important places to visit are Madhav National Park, Madhav Vilas Palace, George Castle and Sakhya Sagar Boat Club.
