Shivpuri, the administrative headquarters of
Shivpuri District, is a historic town situated on
National Highway 2. It is 103 km south-west of
Gwalior.
Shivpuri, though now wields a modern look, the royal legacy of its past still lingers on amongst the old structures, majestic palaces, hunting lodges and the royal streets. Its sylvan surroundings and the undulating hills coupled with a charming climate made it a natural choice as the summer resort capital of the Scindias. Earlier, the woods were the hunting ground for the
Mughals.
Places of tourist interest include Madhav National Park, Madhav Vilas Palace, George Castle, Bhadaiya Kund, Sakhya Sagar Lake and the royal chhatries.
Shivpuri is located 245 km to the north of Bhopal. Nearest airport is at Gwalior (112 km). Shivpuri Railway Station is linked with Gwalior. Nearest major railhead is at Gwalior.
