Mayavaram, generally knows as the Benaras of the poor of the South, is one of the delta regions of
Tamil Nadu. It was a British town near the
Cauvery River in
Thanjavur District. It is well known for fine cotton and silk cloths. The town is considered sacred due of the presence of many holy teerths and the holy river Cauvery. It is also an important pilgrim centre for Buddhists in south India. Mayuranatha Temple, an ancient and beautiful temple of
Lord Shiva, is located there. The church town of Vellankani is situated near Mayavaram town.
Mayavaram is a railway junction on the
Chennai–
Tiruchirapalli main line, 280 km from Chennai Egmore.
