Kolathiris were the separate line of rulers of the
Kolathunad, an ancient kingdom comprising the areas of northern
Kerala. They were the only power at the time of the arrival of the Portuguese towards the end of the 15th century.
Kolathiris were also the political and commercial rivals of the Zamorins of Kozhikkode.
