Kumarakom

Kumarakom, an enchanting backwater destination, located on the Southern coast of India strengthens Kerala’s reputation for being God’s own country. It slumbers on the banks of the famous Vembanad Lake, and the bird sanctuary located here spreads across 14 acres and is an ornithologist's paradise. Kumarakom features mangrove forests, emerald green paddy fields and coconut groves interspersed with enchanting waterways and canals.

Vembanad Lake, Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls and bird sanctuary are the main attractions of Kumarakom. Thekkady, a major wildlife center lies 114 km from here, and Sabarimala, a Hindu pilgrim center is another 134 km from Kottayam.

Boat races, houseboat cruise, canoeing and fishing are available at Kumarakom for tourists. The huge houseboats, traditionally known as the Kettuvalloms offers a truly unique experience.

The peak tourist season is from November to March. Accommodation can be made in and around Kumarakom; Taj Garden Retreat, Water Scapes Resort, Kumarakom Lake Resort and Tharavadu Heritage Home are some retreats. The nearest airport is the Cochin International Airport, which is about 76 km from Kottayam. Kottayam is the closest railhead to Kumarakom, about 14 km away and provides a link to all major cities in Kerala and India. The nearest bus terminal is also at Kottayam.
