Vamana Karma, also known as therapeutic vomiting, is a special ayurvedic aid that promotes the elimination of the vitiated dosha (waste product) through the upper gastro-intestinal track. It is the cleansing procedure to expel materials consisting of undigested food,
Kapha and
Pitta. Vamana literally means expelling the vitiated doshas through the oral route.
The process is done by bringing the toxic substances of the body to the stomach and removing them using vomiting. The Karma is followed by Ghee treatment (Achchapeya) and a steam bath.
After this therapy, one should avoid loud speech, overeating, continuous sitting, long walks, anger, and anxiety. This treatment is very effective for bronchial asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, skin diseases and indigestion.
