Ponkunnam




Ponkunnam is a small village, near Kanjirappally, in Kottayam District. It is about 34 km from Kottayam on the Kottayam-Kumili route.

Ponkunnam is the starting point of the bypass to Erumeli. Ponkunnam is renowned as the hometown of Malayalam literary giant late Ponkunnam Varkey, a famous short story and novel writer of Kerala. Ponkunnam Puthiyakavil Devi temple and Chirakadavu Mahadevar temple are nearby places of worship. Rubber cultivation is the major activity of the village.

Ponkunnam can be reached by road from Palai ( 21 km) and from Kanjirappally (5 km). The nearest railhead is Kottayam Railway Station.
