Ashtamudi Lake is a major water body in
Kollam District. Boasting a length of 16 km, it is the second largest lake in
Kerala. The name ‘ashtamudi’ means ‘eight channels,’ which refers to the channels connected to the lake. The Kalladayar River is the main water source for this lake. The estuary at
Neendakara is this lake’s meeting point with the
Arabian Sea.
Renowned for its scenic beauty, Ashtamudi Lake is a major attraction for the tourists who enjoy a variety of water sports and boat cruises offered by the resorts situated along the banks. The numerous coconut groves that dot the lakeside add to its scenic beauty. The Chinese style fishing nets laid on its waters give the landscape an oriental look.
Ashtamudi Lake is considered as the gateway to Kerala’s famed backwaters, which constitute a group of lakes interconnected by a network of canals. One can hire boats for cruising through the calm lake, from the Kollam Boat Club.
