J. R. D. Tata

Father of Indian Civil Aviation



Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata, an eminent industrialist, was born to Indian parents in Paris on July 29, 1904. Regarded as Father of Indian Civil Aviation, he founded Tata Airlines in 1932, India's first commercial airlines. Later, Tata Airlines became Air-India in 1946. Tata was the director of the Tata Group of Industries including steel, engineering and electrical companies. TISCO, TELCO and TCS are the major firms in the group. For his immense contributions, he received Bharat Ratna in 1992. Leaving behind an industrial empire, J.R.D.Tata passed away on November 29, 1993.
