Kupwara District is situated at an average altitude of 5,300 ft from the sea level, and has dense forests and rich wildlife which make it an important tourist destination. The district covers an area of 2,379 sq km and is bounded by the Line of Control in the north-west and
Baramulla District in the south. The population is approximately 6 million.
Kupwara town is the headquarters.
The famous river Kishan Ganga separates Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and Jammu and Kashmir in
Machil, Keran and Teetwal areas. Agriculture is the chief means of livelihood and walnut is the major horticulture produce.
Places of importance: Karnah Micro Hydel Project, ruins of Ramkund temple at Farkaian, Shardania temple at Guglusa, Nandrishi Pir's tomb at Magam, and Dhyaneshwar temple at Smattan.
There are some well-known passes such as the Gabhra pass,
Sadhna Pass, and Nastuchan Pass.
