Dargah

The word ‘dargah' means ‘king’s court’, literally. It refers to any holy Muslim structure such as the tomb or shrine of a Muslim saint. In Sufism, it is synonymous with ‘door’ and ‘gate.’ In India, a dargah is also a Sufi residence for men – a place where dervishes would meet, do prayer-chanting (zikr) and receive spiritual instruction from the teacher. Dargahs are usually humble buildings but some well funded ones are large enough to contain separate cells for the dervishes to live in, a kitchen and an attached mosque.
