The first planned hill town of the country, Bilaspur is the headquarters of
Bilaspur District in
Himachal Pradesh and is 86 km north-west of
Shimla.
Bilaspur Town has been conceived in place of the old Bilaspur Town, which got submerged by the waters of the Gobind Sagar Lake created by the huge Hydel dam at Bhakra. The new town is situated just above the old town, which was the erstwhile capital of the state since 1663.
Major points of tourist interest here are the temples of Sri Naina Devi Ji, Raghu Nath Ji, Gopal Ji, Vyas Gufa, Khanmukheshwar and Deomati. The annual cattle fair held in the town during March/April draws a large number of traders from far and near. Deoli and Markand are nearby attractions.
Nearest airports are at Chandigarh and Shimla. Nearest broad gauge railway station is at Kiratpur Sahib and narrow gauge railway station is at Shimla.
National Highway 21 and 88 passes through Bilaspur.
