Kalatop Khajjiar Sanctuary




Kalatop Khajjiar Sanctuary, 6 km from Dalhousie, lies in the catchment area of Ravi River. One of the most visited sites in Chamba District, its altitude ranges from 1,185 m to 2,768 m, and the climate varies from 10 to 35 degree celsius. The sanctuary has steep terrains and covers an area of 20.27 sq km.

A large variety of flora and fauna can be found here. The flora constitutes patches of good coniferous and oak forests. Alpine meadows enhance the beauty. Among the mammals and birds are goral, Himalayan black bear, barking deer, jackal, giant Indian flying squirrel and turdus merula.

Khajjiar Lake in the vicinity is the main source of drinking water for the residents here. A visitor center outside the sanctuary caters to the tourists’ needs. Accommodation facilities are available in the rest houses within the sanctuary. The Khajji Naga Shrine dedicated to Khajji Naga, a serpent god, is nearby.

The nearest railhead is Pathankot Railway Station at Pathankot, 86 km away.
